What is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) — sometimes called Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) — is the practice of getting your business recommended by AI assistants like ChatGPT, Google's Gemini, and Perplexity. As more people ask AI for recommendations instead of scrolling search results, GEO is becoming as important as SEO ever was.

How is GEO different from SEO?

SEO is about ranking a page in a list of blue links. GEO is about being named in a single synthesized answer. When someone asks “who's the best {service}near me?”, the AI doesn't show ten links — it picks a few businesses and recommends them. GEO is about being one of those few.

Why GEO matters now

A growing share of searches end without a click — the person reads the AI's answer and acts on it. If the assistant never names you, you never get the chance. The businesses optimizing for this now are quietly capturing demand their competitors don't even know they're losing.

How to do GEO (honestly)

AI assistants synthesize answers from public sources, so GEO means improving those sources: a complete, optimized Google Business Profile; honest reviews from real customers; consistent listings on the directories AI reads; and clear, structured, factual information about your business. You don't game the system — you make yourself genuinely the best answer, and make that easy for AI to see.
