How general contractors get recommended by AI

A kitchen remodel is a big, researched decision — and more homeowners start that research by asking ChatGPT or Gemini “who's a good contractor near me?” Unlike an emergency call, they compare, read what AI says, and shortlist. Being on that shortlist is becoming as valuable as ranking #1 on Google ever was. Here's how to earn it — honestly, and without touching your website.

1. Nail your Google Business Profile

Google's local data feeds AI answers heavily. Pick the most specific primary category that fits — “General contractor,” “Kitchen remodeler,” or “Bathroom remodeling” — and list every service explicitly (kitchen remodels, bathroom remodels, additions, decks, garage conversions). Vague profiles get skipped; AI recommends the business whose profile plainly matches the project the homeowner described.

2. Lead with your license number

For contractors, licensing is the first thing homeowners are told to check — and AI assistants repeat exactly that advice. State your real license number, bonding, and insurance on your profile and listings. Concrete, verifiable credentials are the trust signals AI quotes back when it recommends you. (Only state what's true — these are public records.)

3. Reviews that describe the project

A remodel review that says “finished our kitchen on time and on budget” does double duty: it builds your rating and tells AI exactly what kind of work you do well. After every completed project, ask the happy customer for an honest review that mentions the job. (Never buy or incentivize reviews — it's deceptive and against the rules.)

4. Get on the directories AI reads

Angi, Houzz, Yelp, BBB, Thumbtack, and the local “best contractors in [city]” lists are exactly what assistants cite for remodel questions. Claim and complete those listings with a consistent name, address, and phone — and keep your project photos current where the platform supports them, because complete listings get cited over sparse ones.
